The transformation of the Art Gallery of New South Wales – the Sydney Modern Project – opens to the public from 3 December 2022. Three fantastical bronze sculptures by Francis Upritchard inhabit the entrance court, greeting visitors to the new Welcome Plaza.
The Sydney Modern Project is the most significant cultural development in the city since the opening of the Sydney Opera House nearly half a century ago. Along with Upritchard, the commissioned artists are Lorraine Connelly-Northey, Karla Dickens, Simryn Gill, Jonathan Jones, Yayoi Kusama, Richard Lewer, Lee Mingwei and Lisa Reihana. The public art commissions have been funded by the Art Gallery's Foundation and leading philanthropists.
